Expertise and Research Interests

Research in my laboratory has been focussed on the degradation of cell walls in germinating barley grains and has included investigations of the chemical and physicochemical properties of the polysaccharide components of the walls, the purification and characterization of enzymes responsible for the hydrolysis of major wall constituents, the developmental patterns of the enzymes and, more recently, their genetics, molecular biology and x-ray crystal structure.  In the course of this program, several enzymes that have been implicated in plant-pathogen interactions and their corresponding genes have been characterized and their possible role in the protection of barley against pathogen invasion is being examined.  In collaboration with Professors Tony Bacic, Peter Langridge and Dr. Ed Newbigin, we are undertaking a large program on Functional Genomics in the Growth and End-use Quality of Cereals.  Total funding for the project will be in the order of $8 million over five years (2000-2004).   In 2002 Professor Peter Langridge and I (University of Adelaide), together with Professors Tony Bacic (University of Melbourne), German Spangenberg (Victorian Department of Primary Industries) and Kaye Basford (University of Queensland), successfully applied for the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics.  The ACPFG is centred at the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide and has attracted cash funding of $35 million, from the ARC, the GRDC and the SA State government, over five years.  A new building to house the ACPFG is under construction.  The research programs will be focussed on abiotic stress tolerance in cereals.

Other Expertise

At La Trobe University and the University of Adelaide I have been involved in lecturing, tutoring, presenting practical sessions and co-ordinating biochemistry teaching at all levels of B.Sc. and B.Ag. Sc. courses.  In addition I have supervised more than 25 B.Sc. and B.Ag.Sc. Honours students.  At the University of Adelaide I give 30-35 lectures per year in the subjects Biological Chemistry, Agricultural Biotechnology (to Waite students), Biology I, Biochemistry II and Molecular Activities of Plant Cells (to Faculty of Science students, North Terrace), and Biochemistry and Plant Science (to Roseworthy students). In addition to the lectures, I was involved in associated practical sessions for each of these subjects.  At the postgraduate level 6 M.Sc. and 7 Ph.D. students have completed their degrees under my supervision and currently 8 postgraduate students are completing their studies under my supervision.
